26 Days the Grand East African Safari

Overview

Murchison Falls National Park, is one of the best game parks to visit in Uganda. Located in the Murchison Conservation Area where we also find the Bugungu and Karuma wildlife reserves. The park is endowed with several attractions including over 76 mammal species with four members of the big five, the lion, the leopards, the elephants, and the Buffaloes. Other species include bushbucks, Uganda kob, waterbucks and warthogs, giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeest, hyenas etc. Along the shores and within the waters of the Nile you will see lots of hippos and crocodiles among others and birds which residents to thi park.

Kibale Forest National Park is home to about 13 primate species, usually referred to as the Primate capital of Africa for this reason. Chimpanzee, Colobus Monkeys, Bushbabies, baboons and many other species of primates which you would have a chance to encounter while on a chimpanzee tracking trip. Several bird species inhibit this forest, you will get a chance to visit the Bigodi swamp and also encounter local communities on a community/cultural walking experience.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is the largest National Park and one of the oldest protected areas in Uganda the Pearl of Africa. Here you will engage in game drives searching for the endangered animal species including but not limited to Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Kobs, Buffaloes and Hippos, Crocodiles, several bird species and many others will be found along the Kazinga channel on a launch cruse.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national park, is a UNESCO world heritage site and home to over half of the worlds living mountain gorilla population. Located in the southwestern part of Uganda, this park is part of the Trans Virunga Massive. Trek the steep slopes covered by thick forests searching for the endangered mountain gorillas. After the gorilla Trek you will have a chance to visit the Batwa pygmies for a Tale of their lifestyle while they lived in the forest and the present-day life on the suburbs of the forest.

Volcanoes national park located in the northern part of Rwanda; this park forms part of the Trans Virunga-Massive region. The only region to see mountain gorillas in Africa in their natural habitat. On this trip you can chose to go for a second gorilla trek hear, you will track the golden monkeys and visit the Twin lakes before heading to Kigali for a city tour visiting the genocide memorial.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to all of the Big Five. It is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, and sightings of both black and white rhino are common. Ol Pejeta is said to have the highest predator density in Kenya outside of the Maasai Mara; and there is a good chance of seeing lions, cheetah and hyena.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a refuge for chimpanzees rescued from the black market. It is the only place to see these charismatic apes in Kenya.
The endangered species enclosure is home to the only two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. Visitors can learn of efforts to bring this subspecies back from the brink of extinction.

The best time for wildlife viewing is from July to September and January to March. The soil in the region is mostly black cotton soil, which becomes very difficult to navigate after heavy rain.

Lake Nakuru is Kenya’s most popular national park. The park’s main feature is a large, shallow lake supporting great birdlife, including big flocks of pelicans and variable flocks of flamingos. The lake was once famous for its flamingos, however, since 2012, conditions have become unfavorable for these birds and most have moved to other Rift Valley lakes.

Most big safari animals are present in Lake Nakuru NP with the exception of elephants. The park is known for its populations of black and white rhino. White rhino is particularly conspicuous, and different groups can be encountered throughout the day. Hippo, waterbuck, Burchell’s zebra and Thomson’s gazelle are common on the floodplains.

Lake Nakuru offers good wildlife viewing throughout the year, but the rains might interfere with your game drives in the wettest months, April and May. Although there is great birdlife at the lake, conditions in recent years have become unfavorable for flamingos, which used to be a real attraction here. As a result, the flamingos have moved to other lakes in the Rift Valley.

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s flagship Park. Sightings of four of the Big Five are pretty much guaranteed. The black is more elusive, but can sometimes be spotted in the Mara Triangle. The reserve is one of the best for big cats, but sightings of smaller Predators like a bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, and spotted hyena also tend to be rewarding. Antelope includes impala, reedbuck, Thomson’s gazelle, eland, and Topi, while buffalo, elephant, and giraffe are relaxed and easily spotted Wildlife Highlights The legendary wildebeest migration is one of the world’s most amazing wildlife encounters. Sometime in July and August, millions of animals leave the Serengeti and head into the Masai Mara around September. The crossing of the Mara River along the way is the most spectacular part of the migration. Around October, the migration slowly heads back into the Serengeti again. It should be noted that, although the pattern is well known, the exact timing of the migration is unpredictable as animals move with the rain looking for greener pastures. Best Time for Wildlife Viewing Wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara is good throughout the year. The best months for the wildebeest migration are September and October. June to October is relatively dry and offers the best general wildlife watching.

Amboseli is one of Kenya’s most popular parks, and offers great wildlife viewing. The park is famous for its elephants, but most big safari animals can be spotted here. Black rhino has become extinct, but the other four of the Big Five are present. The plains support an abundance of large herbivores including wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra and Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle.

Amboseli can be visited throughout the year, but the most rewarding wildlife watching is in the Dry season, from June to October, when animals gather around the marshes and other predictable water sources. When dry, animals crossing the sandy plains tend to kick up a lot of dust, offering some great photo opportunities when the light is low.

The park is known for its legendary tree-climbing lion and impressively tusked elephants. Large buffaloes, wildebeest and zebra herds congregate on the grassy plains. The lake is a seasonal home to large flocks of flamingos, and a wide array of waterbirds can be found on the shore at all times. The forest patch at the entrance of the park is home to habituated troops olive baboon and  monkey. The occasional bushbucks can also be spotted here, darting off in the undergrowth. Pairs of klipspringer are sometimes seen balancing on the rocks at the far south of the park and the hippos pool is a good place to see these semi-aquatic creatures up close.

Although Lake Manyara NP offers reasonable wildlife viewing throughout the year, the Dry season, from June to October, is the best time. Wildlife is easier to spot because vegetation is thinner and animals gather around predictable water sources. The Wet season, from November to May, offers the most beautiful scenery, but roads can sometimes become slippery and difficult to negotiate.

After an early breakfast, you will depart from your camp and drive into the Lake Manyara National Park for your game drive. Despite the rather small strip of Land, Lake Manyara National Park won’t let you down when it comes to wildlife spotting. There are over 500 bird species. Flamingos dot the lake surface, joined by a myriad of other water birds that are best spotted at the end of the dry season. The most astonishing encounter at Lake Manyara in the forest is the silvery-cheeked Hornbill and the palm nut vulture. All the large animals that roam the grassy flood plains are resident or migratory in or transiting the lake Manyara region. Although Lion, spotted Hyena serval, caracal, Leopard and Cheetah are more prolific in other parks, keeping an eye up will reap great sightings here. The narrow belt of acacia woodland is the favorite den for the Lake Manyara Tree Climbing Lions. The reason behind this peculiar behavior still remains a mystery to date. You will exit the Lake Manyara National Park at approximately 1130 Hours driving up the Rift valley escarpment and into the Karatu region for Lunch. After lunch, you will proceed towards the Ngorongoro Crater rim and further towards the Serengeti arriving at Serengeti in time for your evening game drive en route to your camp. Be one of only a few fortunate people to glide in a Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti Plains (available at supplementary cost by pre-arrangement). Floating silently above the awakening bush, while spotting wildlife and enjoying the amazing scenery of Africa, across rivers and over numerous small villages. We do an after-breakfast game viewing drive along the Segore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible lion, Thomson gazelle, Topi, ostrich, and cheetah sightings. We will enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch at the Centre in the shade of the giant acacia trees. In the afternoon we will follow the Kopjes Circuit, which goes anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, which usually attract a number of lions and some formidably large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops, scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems, providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons – including lions, which like to lie in wait for animals coming to drink!

Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park is its huge population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the ever-elusive leopard.
