Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Price – Complete Cost Guide 2026
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi price in 2026 ranges from $1,050 per person for a 3-day budget safari to $5,000+ per person for a luxury 7-day immersive experience. The single biggest cost driver is the gorilla permit: $800 per person in peak season, or $600 in the low-season months of April, May, and November. Everything else, lodges, transport, guiding, layers on top of that fixed permit cost.
Why is gorilla trekking expensive? Because it is the rarest, most tightly managed wildlife encounter on earth. There are only ~1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild. Uganda Wildlife Authority limits trekking to 8 visitors per gorilla family per day, meaning global demand perpetually exceeds supply. Every dollar of the permit funds direct ranger salaries, anti-poaching patrols, and community conservation programmes that have helped the mountain gorilla population grow for the first time in decades. The price reflects the scarcity of the animal and the cost of protecting it.
| Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Price, At a Glance 2026 • Budget (3-day, shared vehicle): from $1,050 per person • Mid-range (5-day, private vehicle): from $1,700 per person • Luxury (5–7-day, premium lodge): from $3,000 per person • Gorilla permit (peak season): $800 per person • Gorilla permit (low season, April, May, Nov): $600 per person • Rwanda permit (comparison): $1,500 per person • Park entry fee: $40 per person per day (separate from permit) • Maximum trekkers per family per day: 8 persons (UWA rule) |
What Determines the Cost of Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?
Understanding gorilla trekking in Bwindi price means looking at four key variables that determine exactly where your total cost lands within that range:
The sections below break down every line of Bwindi gorilla trekking cost with full transparency, from the permit to the porter tip.
- Permit season: $600 (low season) vs $800 (peak), a $200 per person gap that adds up fast for groups.
- Accommodation tier: Budget guesthouses at $40/night vs luxury tented camps at $600+/night are the widest variable in the overall cost.
- Group size: Vehicle and guide fees are fixed costs divided across the group. 6 travellers pay 60% less per person for logistics than a solo traveller.
- Itinerary length: A 3-day gorilla-only trip concentrates all costs on two nights. An 8-day circuit spreads fixed logistics across more days, reducing per-day overhead.
Gorilla Trekking Permit Price in Bwindi (Uganda) 2026
The Bwindi gorilla trekking permit is the non-negotiable core of every gorilla trekking in Bwindi price. Set by Uganda Wildlife Authority, it cannot be discounted, negotiated, or bypassed. Here is the complete 2026 structure:
| Visitor Category | Peak Season (Jun–Aug, Dec–Feb) | Low Season (Apr, May, Nov) |
| Foreign Non-Resident (adult) | $800 per person | $600 per person |
| Foreign Non-Resident (child 5–15) | $700 per person | $500 per person |

| East African Citizen | $200 per person | $200 per person |

GHEX (Gorilla Habituation Experience) = 4 hours with a semi-wild gorilla family. No seasonal discount. Standard permit = 1 hour with a fully habituated family.
What the Gorilla Permit Includes
- One full hour in direct proximity to a wild, habituated mountain gorilla family.
- Escorted by UWA-certified armed ranger guides throughout the trek.
- Access to the designated trekking zone within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
- Official UWA gorilla trekking certificate upon completion.
- Contribution to Uganda’s gorilla conservation and community benefit funds.
Why Early Booking Is Critical
The most important thing to understand about gorilla trekking in Bwindi price planning: UWA issues a strictly limited number of permits per day, 8 visitors per gorilla family. Bwindi has 19 habituated families across 4 sectors (Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo), giving a theoretical daily maximum of 152 trekkers across the entire park. In practice, morning sessions in the most popular sectors (Buhoma and Rushaga) sell out weeks to months in advance in peak season. Book through Valiant Safaris immediately upon confirming your travel dates. We purchase permits directly from UWA and hold them in your name on deposit.

Cheap Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi – How to Save Money

The gorilla permit is a fixed cost you cannot reduce. But every other component of gorilla trekking in Bwindi price can be optimised. Here are the four most effective strategies:
1. Travel in Low Season (Save $200 Per Person on the Permit)
April, May, and November 2026 are UWA’s designated low-season months. The gorilla permit drops from $800 to $600, a $200 per-person saving. For a couple, that is $400. For a group of six, $1,200. Low season also brings lodge rate reductions of 15–25%, fewer visitors on the trail, and the forest at its most lush and atmospheric. For budget-conscious travelers, low season is not a compromise. It is the smarter choice.
2. Choose Budget or Mid-Range Lodges
Accommodation is the widest variable in the total gorilla trekking in Bwindi price. Budget guesthouses near the Buhoma or Rushaga gates start at $40–$80 per person per night and are clean, safe, and practical for trekkers who spend most of their time in the forest anyway. Switching from a luxury lodge ($500+/night) to a solid mid-range option ($120–$180/night) can save a couple $700–$1,000 over three nights without any reduction in the quality of the gorilla encounter itself.
3. Join a Small Group Tour
Joining a group cuts the total gorilla trekking in Bwindi price per person by 50–70% on logistics alone. Our set-departure small group safari reduces per-person vehicle and guide costs by 50–70% versus a solo or couple booking. The gorilla permit is the same for everyone. The 4×4 vehicle, the expert guide, the airport transfers, all divided across 4–8 travelers. Our April and May group departures are the most affordable gorilla trekking in Bwindi price available anywhere on the market.
4. Book Permits Early
Early booking does not reduce the permit price, but it guarantees you get your preferred date, preferred sector, and preferred morning session time. Travelers who book late often have to accept a less convenient sector, which adds transport cost. Book with Valiant Safaris as soon as you have confirmed dates, we hold your permit on deposit and guarantee your slot.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi – Premium Experience Cost
For travelers who want the full premium gorilla trekking in Bwindi price experience, the luxury end sits between $1,500 and $5,000+ per person for a 5–7 day safari. Here is what that investment buys:
- Ultra-premium lodges: Properties like Bwindi Lodge, Gorilla Forest Camp, and Mahogany Springs offer forest-edge suites with private decks, butler service, gourmet dining, and spa facilities. Nightly rates from $350 to $1,000+ per person, full-board.
- Private charter flights: A charter from Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip (45 minutes) costs $280–$350 per person return and eliminates the 9-hour road journey. Includes private transfer from the airstrip to your lodge.
- Private safari vehicles: A fully exclusive 4×4 with a senior guide for your party only, with total itinerary flexibility. No shared departures, no fixed timetables.
- Second gorilla trek: A second $800 permit on Day 3 or 4, assigned to a different gorilla family. Each family has an entirely different dynamic. Our clients who do two treks consistently say the second is even more remarkable than the first.
- Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX): $1,500 permit, 4 hours with a semi-wild gorilla family being gradually accustomed to human presence. Maximum 4 visitors. Available in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector. The most exclusive gorilla encounter available anywhere in the world.

Bwindi vs Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Price Comparison
The most common research question from travelers comparing gorilla trekking in Bwindi price against other destinations is: Uganda or Rwanda? Here is the honest, data-based comparison that includes every relevant variable, permit, lodge, transport, and encounter quality:
| Feature | Bwindi, Uganda | Volcanoes NP, Rwanda |
| Gorilla permit (peak) | $800 per person | $1,500 per person |
| Gorilla permit (low season) | $600 (Apr/May/Nov) | No discount, $1,500 year-round |
| Saving per couple (low season) | Baseline | Rwanda costs $1,800 more |
| Habituated gorilla families | 24 families, 4 sectors | 12 families |
| Forest character | Ancient, dense, immersive | More open volcanic slopes |
| Trek difficulty | Moderate to challenging | Moderate |
| Drive from Kigali airport | 3.5–4 hrs via border | 1–2 hrs within Rwanda |
| Total 5-day safari cost | $1,700–$3,000 pp | $2,800–$5,000 pp |
| Best for | Value, immersion, permit choice | Quick Kigali connection |
The gorilla trekking in Bwindi price delivers an identical encounter to Rwanda, one hour, one habituated family, one ranger escort. Rwanda’s premium does not buy a better gorilla. It buys a shorter drive from Kigali. If you fly into Kigali, our 3-Day Uganda Gorillas from Kigali gives you Bwindi in 3.5 hours from the airport at $800 less per person than Rwanda.

Why Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Is Worth the Price
At $800 per permit, some travelers question whether the gorilla trekking in Bwindi price is justified. Here is why every client who treks with us says it is the most worthwhile wildlife experience they have ever had:
- Unmatched rarity: There are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas on earth. You will share the forest with fewer than 8 other visitors for one full hour. No zoo. No fence. No recorded commentary. Wild gorillas, behaving naturally, in ancient rainforest.
- Proximity that defies expectation: Fully habituated gorillas in Bwindi do not fear humans. A silverback may settle within 3 metres of your group. A juvenile may approach your boot. The gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi routinely produces the closest human-wildlife encounter available anywhere on earth.
- Conservation impact: Every permit dollar funds UWA ranger salaries, anti-poaching operations, and community revenue-sharing that gives local families economic incentive to protect, not poach, the gorillas. The mountain gorilla population has grown from 620 in 2002 to over 1,000 today. Your permit contributed to that.
- Once-in-a-lifetime transformation: After 14 years of helping travelers calculate gorilla trekking in Bwindi price, I can tell you with certainty: every single client has said it was worth it. In that time I have watched engineers, lawyers, teachers, and retired couples all emerge from the Bwindi forest with the same expression: a quiet, permanent shift in how they understand the boundary between human and animal. No photograph, no documentary, no description prepares you for it. It is worth the price.
Tips to Book Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi at Best Price
- Book permits at least 3–6 months ahead: Peak season (June–August) permits sell out months in advance. Low season (April, May) is moving faster than any prior year due to the new $600 pricing. The moment your travel dates are confirmed, contact us.
- Choose a licensed, UWA-accredited operator: Only licensed operators can purchase UWA permits. Unlicensed “agents” cannot guarantee the permits they advertise and frequently cancel bookings when they cannot secure them. Valiant Safaris purchases every permit directly from UWA.
- Compare what is included, not just the headline gorilla trekking in Bwindi price: A $1,200 package that excludes the park entry fee, airport transfer, and meals is not cheaper than a $1,400 package that includes all of those. Ask for an itemised quote before comparing operators.
- Avoid “too good to be true” pricing: A genuine Uganda gorilla safari with permit, guide, vehicle, and accommodation cannot legitimately cost less than $1,050 per person. Offers below that level involve unverified permits, unlicensed guides, or logistics that collapse at the critical moment.
- Request a written permit confirmation: A reputable operator, including Valiant Safaris, sends you a UWA permit reference number with your booking confirmation. If an operator cannot provide this, your booking is not secured.

FAQs – Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Price
How much does gorilla trekking cost in Bwindi?
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi price in 2026 starts at $1,050 per person all-in for a 3-day budget safari in low season, using the $600 April/May UWA permit. Peak season mid-range packages range from $1,700–$2,500 per person. Luxury experiences start at $3,000 per person.
Why is gorilla trekking in Bwindi so expensive?
The primary cost driver is the UWA gorilla permit at $800 peak / $600 low season, set by Uganda Wildlife Authority to fund ranger salaries, anti-poaching operations, and community conservation. Additionally, mountain gorilla trekking is strictly limited to 8 visitors per family per day, meaning demand permanently exceeds supply. The experience is rare by deliberate design, and the price reflects that scarcity.
Can I get a discount on the gorilla permit?
No operator can discount the UWA permit price, it is a government-set fee. The only legitimate way to pay less for a gorilla permit is to trek during low season (April, May, or November), when the permit drops to $600 per person, saving $200. There is no other discount mechanism. Be very wary of any operator claiming to offer discounted permits.
What is the cheapest way to trek gorillas in Bwindi?
The cheapest legitimate option is our 3-Day Uganda Gorillas from Kigali in April or May, using the $600 low-season permit. All-in cost from approximately $1,250 per person, including permit, guide, vehicle, two lodge nights, and meals. Traveling in a group of 4–8 reduces per-person logistics costs further.
Is gorilla trekking in Bwindi worth the price?
In 15 years of handling gorilla trekking in Bwindi price calculations for clients from 40+ countries, I have never had a single client say it was not worth the cost. The mountain gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi is singular: one hour, eight visitors maximum, wild gorillas behaving naturally in ancient rainforest. It is the most intimate human-wildlife encounter available anywhere on earth. Every person who has done it says the same thing: they would pay it again without hesitation.
