Encounter The Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A Journey with Valiant Safaris

In the heart of Africa, where lush forests meet mist-covered mountains, lies Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. An enchanting realm that cradles one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring creatures, the mountain gorillas. In November 2023, I embarked on a life-changing adventure with Valiant Safaris, a leading expedition company, to Encounter the Mountain Gorilla in Bwindi, the magnificent beings in their natural habitat. The journey not only fulfilled a long-standing dream but also offered a profound connection with nature at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. I overnighted at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, a sanctuary nestled within the park’s captivating suburbs.

From Entebbe to Kisoro

My journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park began at Entebbe International Airport, where anticipation mingled with excitement as I boarded a flight to Kisoro Airport. Valiant Safaris seamlessly orchestrated this leg of the journey, ensuring a smooth transition from the bustling capital to the serene landscapes of southwestern Uganda. The Caravan we flew in by Aerolink Uganda was pleasant, the aerial view painted a canvas of greenery below, a prelude to the natural wonders awaiting me Bwindi.

Upon landing at Kisoro Airport, a swift transfer to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge unveiled the charm of the region. The journey was a visual feast, offering glimpses of terraced hillsides, small villages, and the majestic Virunga mountain range. As we drove from Kisoro to Nkuringo, the road wound through the scenic countryside, and the air was imbued with the crisp fragrance of mountain flora—a tantalizing preview of the immersive adventure that awaited. It was rough and bumpy on most of the sections of this drive, my driver named it an African massage lol! A luxurious stay and the ambience made me forget about the experience at it was a haven in itself.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge: A Haven Amidst Wilderness in the Gorilla Park

Nestled on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge revealed itself as a haven of tranquility. The lodge, crafted with eco-friendly principles, seamlessly blended into the natural surroundings, offering a harmonious retreat. The cozy cottages, adorned with local artistry, provided a warm and inviting atmosphere, a welcome contrast to the rugged terrain beyond.

The breathtaking panorama from the lodge stretched across the forest canopy, creating a living postcard of mist-shrouded mountains and dense vegetation. The lodge’s commitment to sustainability was evident in every detail, from the solar-powered amenities to the locally sourced cuisine that tantalized the taste buds with authentic Ugandan flavors.

The Encounter: Up Close with the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi

The highlight of the expedition was undoubtedly the face-to-face encounter with the mountain gorillas. Valiant Safaris, with their extensive expertise, orchestrated a seamless trek into the heart of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. My trekking permit and registration procedures were well catered for.

It all started in the morning by driving to the Park offices with my packed Lunch, here i joined other trekkers for a briefing at 8am. A gorilla family was assigned to a group of 7 trekkers and i was among those. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides and armed with the promise of adventure, we embarked on a journey that would etch memories for a lifetime.

The trek through the dense forest was a sensory immersion—a symphony of rustling leaves, distant bird calls, and the occasional murmur of hidden streams. Each step unveiled the magic of Bwindi Impenetrable forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.

We trekked for about 2 hours through the think forest and the step slopes, past some slippery slopes served by water streams. And then, amidst the ancient trees, we encountered the mountain gorillas. The moment was surreal—a family of gorillas lounging in the dappled sunlight, oblivious to our presence. The silverback, a symbol of strength and authority, surveyed his domain, while playful juveniles tumbled and swung from vines. It was an intimate communion with these gentle giants, fostering a deep appreciation for the delicate balance of nature.

Just before we left we also caught glimpses of another silverback with other family members, we were luck enough to trek a group with 2 silverbacks, 2 baby gorillas, 2 juveniles and 7 adult gorillas.
We spent a good 1 hour seeing and taking photos with this amazing creature.

The transfer from the lodge to Kisoro Airport retraced the scenic route, offering a chance to reflect on the transformative experience in the heart of Bwindi.

The return flight provided one last aerial spectacle of Uganda’s diverse landscapes—the patchwork of fields, meandering rivers, and the sprawling beauty of Lake Victoria. It was a poignant farewell to a country that had captured my heart with its warm hospitality and untamed natural splendor.

In retrospect, my adventure with Valiant Safaris to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park stands as a testament to the extraordinary experiences that responsible travel can offer.
