
Murchison falls National Park is the largest and oldest park in Uganda harboring over 76mammal species, inclusive of the big five (although the rhinos are currently at Zziwa rhino sanctuary which is along the way to Murchison falls National Park), 500bird species, several reptiles, various birds, a number of chimpanzees, butterflies, beautiful fauna and much more and is therefore one of the most visited parks in Uganda. Also, the people around the park, namely the people of Bomu village have an interesting culture that is attractive especially to tourists. This makes it an ideal location for a self drive safari.
In Uganda, you can do a self-drive safari to the park or they could choose to use a tour operator company to take them there as they may not be sure of the location or the roads to use to get to the park.
Getting there- By road, the park is 305km from Kampala the capital city of Uganda and will last anything between 5 to 6 hours’ drive.
Accommodation facility- There are several lodges both inside and outside the park from which the visitor can choose from to their comfort. One can also choose to plan their whole safari with a tour operator to save themselves the whole tiring hustle.
BEST TIME TO VISIT MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK
It should be noted that Murchison falls National Park is open all year through and enjoyable to visit any time of the year however, the months of December to February and June to September are the most favorable times within which to visit the park. This is because this is generally a dry season hence the roads leading to the park are generally navigable as well as the trails within which trekking occurs. In addition, the months of June to September are not only favorable for game viewing, they are also part of the high season within which the park receives a lot of visitors so it is necessary for one to book their accommodation services months prior to their visit as the competition will be high.
