3-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
I took my family to Bwindi last year and we’ll never forget it. Waking up at half four in the morning, still pitch-black outside, my guide Moses handed me steaming tea. The walk is brutal honestly – mud everywhere, roots trying to trip you, and at one point my daughter thought she couldn’t go on. But Moses kept telling stories about the gorillas, kept us motivated.
When we finally saw the silverback, just sitting there eating leaves, my daughter started crying. Not from fear, but because it was so incredible. The silverback looked right at us for what felt like forever but was probably just minutes. Your heart’s racing, hands shaking, and you realize why people spend thousands to be here. The whole thing lasted about an hour before they tell you to leave.
Not everyone manages the walk though. I met a couple who only made it halfway. It’s steep, slippery, and if you’re not in decent shape you’ll struggle. Wear proper boots – trainers won’t cut it. Bring waterproof stuff because even if it doesn’t rain, the vegetation soaks you.
Price from: $1,850 per person comfortable or $2,490 midrange if you want nicer accommodation
Where We Stayed Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge was brilliant – simple rooms but the chef cooked the best meals. The other option, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest, is fancier but honestly the gorillas don’t care where you slept.
3-Day Murchison Falls National Park Safari
My mate told me to skip this one and go straight to Bwindi, but I’m glad I didn’t listen. The Nile River crashing through that narrow gap is absolutely mental – the sound alone is worth it. We saw it at sunrise and got soaked from the spray but no one cared.
The drive up from Kampala is long, maybe eight hours with stops. You pass through Ziwa where they’re bringing back rhinos – the guy leading our walk, a local called Richard, used to poach rhinos years ago. He now protects them. Real redemption story that is. Walking near them is tense in a good way. They’re massive and unpredictable.
Murchison itself is bigger than you’d think. Some days you see tons of animals, other days few of them. We got lucky with a lion sighting, and the hippos on the river cruise were mad – one of them nearly attacked our boat and everyone screamed. The Nile cruise at sunset was probably my favorite evening of the whole trip. Peaceful, beautiful, and you can actually relax.
The roads are rough though. Your backside will hurt. Bring cushions if you’re sensitive. And the dust can get everywhere – in your mouth, your ears, your camera. Pack a proper hat, you need a proper safari vehicle.
Price: $1,000 basic or $3,000 for better lodges
Real Talk: The guides here know their stuff but some speak better English than others. If you need detailed explanations, mention this when booking. The park can be hit or miss for wildlife so don’t expect a guarantee especially for the big cats like lions and leopards.
Where We Stayed: Pakuba Safari Lodge is right on the river, nice views from breakfast. The mid-range option, Pakuba Safari Lodge, had friendlier staff honestly. They’d chat with you about the park after dinner.

7-Day Uganda Wildlife Safari
This one is packed; you’re bouncing around from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi. My sister did this and said she was constantly moving. By day five she was knackered and just wanted to sleep. But she also saw chimpanzees, lions, and gorillas all in one week, which is mental.
Kibale’s chimpanzees are loud. Like, properly loud. Hearing them scream at dawn is something else entirely – makes the hair on your arms stand up. Tracking them through the forest is sweaty work. You’re climbing hills, stepping over roots, and sometimes they’re moving away from you faster than you can follow.
Queen Elizabeth is a surprise, the tree-climbing lions in Ishasha are real – we saw two of them just chilling in acacia trees. Not every trip sees them though, so don’t bank on it. The Kazinga Channel is beautiful, lots of birds and animals.
Then you’re off to Bwindi for the gorillas. By this point you’re tired but the gorillas make it worth it. The problem is you don’t really settle anywhere. You’re unpacking, repacking, sleeping somewhere new every two nights. It’s tiring.
Price: $2,500 or $3,950 with upgrades
What to Pack: Proper walking boots are essential. You’ll do multiple forest treks. Bring blister plasters. Seriously. Your feet will need them.
Who Should Do This; People who want to see everything and don’t mind being exhausted. If you like one place and want to stay, put, this isn’t for you.
10-Day Ultimate Uganda Safari Adventure
My dad and I did this one and it was different than the 7-day rush. You actually have time to breathe. You spend two nights in most places instead of one, so you’re not constantly packing. Lake Bunyonyi at the end is perfect – gentle boat rides, nice walks, and you can actually talk to other travelers without everyone rushing off.
Five different landscapes mean you need different clothes. I packed t-shirts, fleece, rain jacket, and hiking trousers. By the end of the trip, I’d worn all of it. The altitude shifts mess with you a bit – my dad got headaches the first two days but then adjusted.
Ten days is long enough that your body stops complaining about the physical stuff. The first safari walks your legs hurt. By day seven they’re used to it. Plus, you have time to think about what you’re seeing instead of just checking things off a list.
Price Ranges from: $3,000 basic to $6,000 depending on where you stay
Budget Tip
The staff – guides, porters, lodge workers – appreciate tips. $10-20 per day per person if you had good guides. It actually means something to them. Not expected but appreciated.
Where to Stay
Primate Safari Lodge is right at the park headquarters of Kibale Forest, Mweya Safari Lodge has fantastic views of the channel from your room. Mahogany Springs Lodge, Birdnest Bunyonyi Resort and Mihingo Lodge. The smaller eco-lodges are often run by families and they’ll give you honest advice about what’s worth doing.
When to Visit

June through September is genuinely better for trekking. Paths are dryer, it’s not muddy nightmares, and wildlife isn’t scattered everywhere. December to February is also good, weather-wise anyway.
But honestly? I went in November and had the best time. Fewer people, the landscapes were green and lush, and the bird watching was incredible. It rained once or twice but nothing major. Just fewer tourists mean more space, better interactions with guides, and you actually get a table at dinner.
The trade-off is the rainy seasons (March-May, October-November) can be unpredictable. You might get rained on. The paths get slippery. But you get the place to yourself basically and lower prices for the luxury stays.
Wildlife You would See
Mountain gorillas are the main event and everyone wants to see them. You’ll these apes them if you go to Bwindi or Mgahinga, they don’t really hide. Chimpanzees in Kibale are incredible. Lots of birds. Lions and leopards, though not guaranteed. Rhinos, elephants, buffalo, giraffes – all the big ones you’d expect.
Real talk though: some days you see loads, some days fewer. It’s not a zoo where you walk past every animal in two hours. It’s the real experience where animals are doing their routine and you’re lucky to spot them. That’s part of what makes it special actually.
Accommodation Choices
Mid-range lodges are fine. Beds are clean, food is decent, and the staff are helpful. Rooms are basic but you’re not there to admire the wallpaper. You’re there to sleep after a big day. Some places have electricity all day, others only evenings. Bring a power bank.
Luxury places are nicer obviously, better food, private guides sometimes, but they may not always be worth the extra cash.
Some mid-range places were genuinely lovely. Shop around and read actual reviews, not the marketing stuff.
.
A few popular choices include:
• Paraa Safari Lodge – overlooking the Nile River
• Mweya Safari Lodge – spectacular views of the Kazinga Channel
• Buhoma Lodge – steps adjascent to Bwindi’s gorilla trails
• Kyaninga Lodge – a boutique gem close Kibale Forest
• Primate Lode – right at Kanyancu headquarters inside Kibale Forest
• Mihingo Lodge – Overlooking Lake Mburo National Park
• Birdnest Bunyonyi Resort – on lake bunyonyi
No matter your favorite, every stay combines true Ugandan warmth with modern facilities.

My Personal Experience with Valiant Safaris
When I joined my 7 Days Uganda Safari Package from Kampala with Valiant Safaris, I didn’t envisage it to be life-changing but it truthfully was.
From the moment I met my leader, Moses, I felt I was in harmless and well-informed hands. He distinguished every bird call, every trail, and even foretold where we might find a leopard resting.
The highpoint for me was trekking gorillas in Bwindi. After a sheer climb through bright green foliage, we found a silverback sitting serenely, his eyes meeting mine for a fleeting but powerful moment. I’ll never forget that stillness just the sound of the forest living around us.
The cabins, food, and group were perfect. Every sunset over the African grassland repetitive me why Uganda is called the Pearl of Africa.
