Mountain Morungole Mountain range at 2750m is the highest point in Kidepo Valley National Park. It may not be tall in comparison with other mountains in Uganda. But its rising from the flat plains of Karamoja makes it astounding. It covers and marks large parts of the Southern boundaries of the park. The high altitude is covered with montane forests and different vegetation set up. The temperatures are slightly cooler than the rest of the plains. because of the montane forests which also provide shelter to birds and monkeys.
Due to the high altitudinal range which is different from the rest of Karamoja, Mount Morungole is a big factor in influencing climatic conditions and drainage system in the park. Thereby affecting the movement if wildlife and work of tourists in the park. The Mountain is the source of Narus River. When it rains, different streams collect water into the mountain, causing vegetation to flourish.
Wildlife has a lot to feed on in this season and a lot of it can be spotted around this area in this season. Unlike the dry season where the animals are forced to move deeper into the wilderness hence giving the tourists a challenge to spot them. It is easy to spot the iconic Mountain Morungole because it is a point of reference. This gives the tourist an impression of a natural laid back setting of life. It is a perfect spot for photographers to capture top of trees and lushing vegetation beneath. The hike to the mountain takes 8hours, bringing adventure and experiences that last a lifetime to the traveler.
Mountain Morungole is the ancestral home of a small group of people called the Ik. The Ik hardly travel beyond their ancestral home, let alone beyond Karamoja region. They are super content with their culture with no interests of blending into the modern world. Tourists of the mountain should spare time and interact with the Ik for a more fulfilling safari experience.
