Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Fees increased to USD 800 starting July 2024

July 2024 will mark a change in the Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Fees, for all gorilla safaris to the Pearl of Africa. With Over 60% of the mountain Gorilla population 13% in the Virunga massive, Uganda has the highest chances of seeing mountain gorillas face to face in their natural habitat.

However, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced a slight change in the tariff effective 1st July 2024. Visitors to the gorilla parks will have to pay increase permit fees by $100 for this popular activity. The Ugandan government has announced a hike in the gorilla trekking permit fees in a bid to enhance conservation efforts and sustainable tourism in the region.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Announces Conservation Tariff Review Effective 1st July 2024 to June 2026

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced a conservation tariff review, effective from July 1st, 2024 to June 30th, 2026. The new tariff will impact the cost of gorilla and chimpanzee permits for national parks such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, known for their rich biodiversity and endangered Ape species.
It will also affect specialized activities like carnivores (loin tracking) Experience in the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The increase in permit prices will Impact conservation of mountain gorillas in Uganda. Much as the price has been increased by USD100, from the previous $700 to now $800, Gorilla trekking in Uganda is still lower than the cost of gorilla permit in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park which stands at USD 1500. So a Gorilla tracking permit is cheapest in Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by Uganda and Rwanda remains the most expensive.

Why do Gorilla Trekking Permit Fees Keep on Increasing?

By the end of January 2024, Uganda announced an increase in the cost of gorilla tracking permits to take effective 1st July 2024. The new gorilla permit costs will impact those interested in a gorilla trekking tour in Bwindi impenetrable and Mgahinga National Parks, as well as chimpanzee tracking.

The decision to raise the fees for gorilla and chimp trekking permits comes as the country seeks to generate more revenue for the Conservation of Uganda’s mountain gorilla population. Additionally, a higher price helps to regulate the numbers visiting the endangered Apes hence promoting Ecotourism and sustainability.

With Africa’s mountain gorilla population being a major attraction for Uganda safaris, the government aims to ensure a long-term sustainability of gorilla tracking in Uganda.

More Habituated Gorilla Families Announced in January 2024

Uganda an East African community member, also announced a raise in the number of Habituated gorilla families. This follows a successful process of making more groups ready for gorilla trekking experiences.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority has announced the addition of more five (05) habituated gorilla families for visitors to engage with. Thus increasing the opportunities for eco-tourism and conservation efforts in the region.

These Families are; Binyindo and Muyambi in Buhoma. While Rwigi and Tindatine in Rushaga and Posho in Nkuringo Sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable national Park.

With these new families, Uganda now offers 194 normal gorilla trekking permits, and 04 Gorilla Habituation experience permits available to book daily starting late January 2024.
